A very sorry example of a Victorian Shield Back mahogany hall chair, note the awkward angle of the left front leg and the butchered attempt at striping the varnish on the back. ![]() |
|
With seat removed it's clear why the leg was falling off, a previous attempt at a repair had been made using bits of pine for tennons. |
The back leg was the same, the back rail had been made of pine and screwed to the back leg because the mortice had broken away. ![]() |
The front leg showing the mortice damage. There was nothing to do other than make a new top section and graft it onto the good lower part of the leg. ![]() |
The same course of action was applied to the rear leg shown here. ![]() |
The same back leg with new secton joined in prior to staining and polishing. ![]() |
|
Yes! it is the same chair with all the mortice and tennons remade in mahogany, new bracings to the frame underneath and a new seat board. All stained with a peruvian mahogany stain and polished ready to go back to the customer. ![]() |
